@specialopsdave California here! Pipelines and homes tend to have earthquake protection valves, and it's rare for there to be fires caused by gas leaks. I think all new homes have to have a "seismic valve" at the meter that trips and closes in case of an earthquake. It may seem unsafe in theory, but in practice it's very well regulated and tested and rarely causes problems, and then generally it's due to gross negligence. In addition, both natural gas and propane have very strong odorants added that are unmistakable, so any leaks will be quickly noticed. I suppose it's kind of like how I think it sounds dangerous having 380 volt 3 phase ac in houses, or using 230 volts for countertop appliances. I work with industrial control systems and such and so I have no fear of working around those voltages myself, but I also wouldn't want them in wall outlets around civilians and kids lol So I think it's about what we are used to and don't see the danger in anymore, rather than the actual dangers involved.
