I went duck hunting a few years ago with a friend who invited me to Birmingham. I was only there for four days. I never got into the city. I'm amazed it got the same problems of blight as Detroit where I worked till I lost my auto manufacturing job. We need to invest back into are county and quit shipping jobs over seas ...

In 2020 it 331,449 281 ...The u.s. population has tripled in 80 year. Threw automation has cut jobs. Now low paying retail and service job that left.

BECKLEY was know for the best coal. It was call the smokeless coal capital..I used to drive semi truck loads of coal from Berkeley to a local train station to ship to power plants in a 500 miles area. Then my company would pickup the coal when it arrived at the other train yard. Then we take it to the local power plants. I lost my job with my other trucker friends. 300 of us. And the coal miner also lost thier jobs also.4000 men. A very sad ending to a wonderful town...

I went with a Christian mission in February 2023 to help feed and cloth the homes. Spent a month cooking hot food meal. I sat and talked to about 100 homeless. It's sad ,most got hooked on drugs. Can't find work and commit shoplifting, just so the police bring them to jail. In jail they got a warm bed and food they told me. What a way to survive. The mission tries to get them medical, housing and jobs... but only 23 out of 100 go straight. The other 77 return back...

Those homeless people have better camping equipment then I have. And they also have free Christmases lighting ornaments ....

This is my wife's home town... would you believe Charleston is the state capital of west Virginia.. now look at it...the coal industry is gone along with manufacturing that once at once was a booming city. My wife is glad I took her away from that place 25 years ago..... Even Daniel Boone did once live there..He kept moving west ward..

What happened to Franklin is that two famous oil companies Quaker state and penzoil that was founded there got bought out threw mergers. Shell petroleum of Texas closed the refineries and capped oil pump production... Shell moved everything to Texas and purchased the brand names only...

The Automobile capital at one time. Unbelievable a major industria metro city turn into this... i remember CBS 60 minutes did a story on how many abandoned home and industrial buildings needing removed. 85,000 in total. And no funding to demolished

I go fishing up there... My family and I stay at the quality inn right downtown. It is a very clean town. Reminds me of that television show Mayberry.... It has everything a small-town would need. The courthouse is right up the street...

Reply to the truth....you never got off the main street that's why... you didn't see the blight. Go on west grant. Turn on a side street. It right in plan sight. Remember the group of people who ran the town in the past. Drove business out and ushered in poverty. It was ran like the Sopranos from the HBO cable t.v. show from New Jersey.

What you see here is what is left of the 20th century . Now presently a 21st century ghost town. That how capitalism works.
