The SEALs weren't inspired by SAS. You're thinking of Delta Force, whom were modeled directly after SAS. SEALs were created as a desire for the services to develop unconventional warfare 1962. SEAL Team 6 was created as response to a failed Delta Force hostage ambush. SEAL Team 6 is probably the only SEAL Team that is similar to what Delta Force and SAS are. In simple terms, SAS are on America's tier 1 special missions units level. Only Seal Team 6, Delta Force, Air Force 24th STS, CIA ISA and Ranger RRC are tier 1 units. The rest of the SEAL teams are are a step under them, at tier 2, along with Green Berets, Army 75th Rangers, Marine Raiders/MARSOC, Air Force CCT and Army Asymmetric Warfare Group.
