@orbatos seems that my comment got lost, so here you go: 1. snap store backend is proprietary. snap daemon and snapcraft are not 2. screen applications? Now they do thorough screening of them, both automated and manual 3. Traditional packages have their own drawbacks :) 4. Do you talk about flatpak, which can't get security fully right and have much smaller featureset compared to snaps?

Snaps are not a bad thing and no, it's not ubuntu-only. And their experiments didn't died, they're alive, in community space.

Buy bigger disk, don't skimp on it. Seriously though, it's a non-issue honestly. Just like flatpaks take more disk space.

Much lesser than long time ago, and since they in grease security much more than flatpak, I'm willing to pay that price.

@orbatos 1. They fixed screening apps, so no malware should sneak in 2. Only proprietary stuff around them is snap store backend, which is not mandatory to publish your snaps e.g on github releases page. 3. Snapd (snap daemon) and snapcraft (application to build snaps) are entirely open source. 4. Distribution of apps packaged as snaps under deb cover is their choice 5. Snaps have obvious advantages to things like flatpak, since flatpak is too lenient on things like security.

@Tufhhuyy you have them, you're just not aware of them currently

Your opinion on snappy base and stuff is overreaching, simply because they wouldn't introduce deb822 for Ubuntu 24.04 for apt sources. Plus, without deb packages you can't create snaps :) Their Ubuntu Core is available since few years and they won't drop debs for core stuff. Biggest news is to bring desktop part to Ubuntu Core, where not only canonical, but also KDE does work on :)
