  4. @ There was a similar proposal for Georgia to join NATO. In that instance it was Russia that did the provoking and the Georgians failed to negotiate (they were snared before they could react). Chechnya was a different case, it was effectively controlled by organised crime, much like some South American states. After an attack in Moscow, it had to be stopped. Western press hugely exaggerated the war and its consequences. All Russia needs is neutral buffer states, not having an ocean on its eastern and western borders and weak compliant countries north and south. Ever since 1945 (probably since 1920) the US has tried to encircle Russia with hostility.

  7. It’s not “the world” that turns its back on the unfortunate (left voting) citizens, it’s the USA and it’s client states. The crushing suffering of ordinary citizens in Venezuelan is the direct result of US sanctions applied because the citizens had the effrontery to elect a government not slavishly obedient to the USA. Similarly in Zimbabwe, along with too rushed Africanisation of agricultural exports.

  39. WE (the ordinary citizens) were not consulted or given a choice. Those decisions are/were taken by the undemocratic big fossil fuel companies. Such questions have barely made a footnote in election campaigns. And now those same extremely powerful lobbyists have managed to get even demonstrating against them made a criminal offence. The idea that we live in a democracy where the people can determine the direction of their lives is just a sick joke.
