  1. Totally agree, but our government has never been set up to represent the will of the people. If Starmer does indeed expose those shortfalls, that might possible begin the process of creating a better system.

  3.  @Tensquaremetreworkshop  We have no political education, therefore voters have very little understanding of the consequences of their votes or of how the political system works, or how it could work differently. Tory constituencies tend to vote conservatively regardless of who is parachuted in as their candidate (as adequately demonstrated by many incompetent Conservative MPs in the last parliament) while usually members of other parties are there from conviction of their beliefs. As was demonstrated in the last election, the incumbent party was rejected (having been seen to be incompetent). Labour received less than 1/3 of the support of voters, but due to out particular antiquated electoral system, they gained most of the seats. As explained above, the situation is not simple, nor are any solutions. Alas, “power tends to corrupt and absolute power (or a huge majority) to corrupt absolutely.” (Acton didn’t seem to appreciate this comment on India is a universal truth.)

  4.  @Tensquaremetreworkshop  Democracy may indeed be “the least worst” because it includes accountability. Since Athenian times there have been many versions of democracy. Then, only free men could vote, which meant less than 1/4 of the adult population. In Europe, many people simply voted with their feet, or their spears. Nowadays there are democratic systems of citizens assemblies which have proven to work very well. (But as they are extremely difficult to control, political leaders don’t like them.) There are several different voting systems, and different parliamentary systems. Westminster, being one of the oldest is stuck, petrified from the post English civil war era. (Scotland wasn’t and shouldn’t now be part of that system.) The UK could learn a lot from other systems, but once a leader is in power he doesn’t want to change the system that got him there. Thus “democracy” has become completely corrupted, as in the USA.
