Even if it was Putin’s action, is that surprising when NATO is using its satellite surveillance to direct missiles and drones into Russia?

Interesting account. Once the ferry at Salen, Isle of Mull, was similarly buffed, so hard that the deck bollard was torn out!

It sounds just like the “disputes” between the British and the Spanish in the era of Elizabeth 1st. Raleigh was a state sponsored pirate, just like the Americans in the Middle East.
2
I just hope “fire’s out” is actually fire out. My father experience of ship fire is that it can reignite unless the whole encasing zone is cool.

It’s good to see someone is taking action against Israeli terrorism in Gaza. It’s very easy to fix; stop supplying Israel with anything related to their military. And call out the Zionists for their illegal (under international law and UN directives) action. The problem is that both Israel and the US think they are above such law.

Russia can probably export oil & gas from Vladivostok and avoid the pesky European sanctions.

Again China leads. There’s something to be said for state modulated capitalism.
1
Sounds like time for law and inspection to control the loading of cargo.

It’s important to remember that most serious accident occurred when more than one safety measure failed, or under situations which were not figured into the original plan. (Titanic, the collapse of the Tay bridge in Scotland, the nuclear reactor in Japan, the Herald of Free Enterprise and many others)

@Willy_TepesNo, it was US sabotage. You don’t go and blow up your own export route. Biden has explicitly stated that he would not allow Nordstrom to operate (undercutting American gas exports).
1
@MUUKOW3 Some American brain fart.
1
No information in the Brexistan news because Prick Sunak hasn’t yet worked out how to get a vote from it.
1
Step one, US backs off from supporting Israel. Then Israel backs off from their massacre of Palestinians … peace follows in the Red Sea.
1
@joeysausage3437 They seize ships on the high seas, just as Raleigh did. Of course, Americans may view this as legitimate, because they imagine they own the world, or at least they think they are the world's law-givers.

Possible solutions, other than EVs getting non-flammable batteries. Can the EVs be loaded as deck cargo, while they are still relatively fewer than fossil fuel vehicles? Can there be automatic release mechanism for deck cargo, to jettison burning vehicles? Can the compartments be hermetically sealed once loaded? (Starving fire.) Improve loading techniques so the batteries are not damaged?
1
Who damages the Nordstream pipeline? Well, would you damage your own exports? It’s obviously the Ukrainians or their palls.

Having seen the ferocity of storms in the Black Sea, arising very quickly, I’m not so surprised the ships were in trouble. The Black Sea has an ancient history of sudden marine disasters.
1
As ever, profit rules. It’s time for maritime authorities and insurers around the world to demand appropriate safety standards, such as bulkheads, smaller sealable compartments so that fire can be isolated and the free wash of water can be better controlled. This of course will be costly but if most (hopefully all) countries demand the same, these safety standards will be accepted.

Alas the wreck of the Pamir, the last square-rigger on the North Atlantic route.

NZ is a small country with a small economy generating small revenues.
1
You sound concerned that this is a Russian project. It’s time to learn to cooperate rather than to complete and waste resources.
1
Having seen the huge arrangement of deck cargo on container ships, would it be possible to construct car carriers with lower freeboard and a deck “cabin” structure for EVs, on an insulated deck? (NASA knows a lot about insulation.) This could allow much greater use of water to contain fire, with water allowed to run off the deck. Isolation & insulation of the two types of vehicle is surely an obvious first step.
1
Delaying departure isn’t going to prevent fire once the ship is loaded. It might protect the crew, but it seems to me that there needs to be research on how to extinguish Li-io fires, what safe chemicals can be used?
1
@grahamstrouse1165 more research needed. And a change to the new sodium batteries which don’t burn.
1
Is it possible to retrieve the “black box” from the Verity?
1
Stopping corruption in Ukraine! 😂😂😂 That’ll really upset the political class!!
1
The US, exactly in line with Israel regards itself as above international law. Have a look around to see just how many other almost unilaterally agreed laws and conventions the US (and Israel) refuse to sign up to … relating to human rights, the responsibilities of soldiers, atomic weapons, the use of degraded uranium … and plenty more.
1
Of course the US government ignores public protests and continues to support the Israeli genocide (by any legal definition is IS genocide).

Please don’t qualify “unique”. Unique in 1. You can’t have “very one”, or “quite one” or “fairly one”. Unique is unique.

I suspect Russia is exporting lots of diesel to China by rail. I used to see trains of almost 100 wagons of oil when I lived there.
1
Rowing boats transport? Come on, you can do better than that. Just use a few bottles in the ocean; maybe a net of bottles holding up a container.
