The people of the countries affected are of absolutely no concern to the policy makers - as with slavery, an the Balfour agreement, to mention but two of a very long list. No country has a "clean" history, but that doesn't excuse us.

  5. Britain’s imperial history is extremely uncomfortable to acknowledge. An Indian professor I knew 60 years ago commented that the British went to India to do things that would have been totally unacceptable back home.

As long as decisions on planning, material and maintenance affecting Grenfell and similar local authority buildings are made by committees in which individual votes are not recorded, nothing will change. The committee meetings must be accurately recoded and indicated votes recorded (as in Hansard). Only then can individual members of these committees be held to account, and where appropriate, charged with criminal negligence or similar offences.

The British East India company began by destroying the indigenous Cotten industry which was as advanced as the British, it then took the cotton, and sold cotton goods back to India, thereby retarding Indian industrialisation.

Many (certainly not 90+%) are indeed able bodies men, who are willing to work and pay tax, thus contributing to the economy of the host country. Wars only make the situation worse.

  27.  @woodsghost9088  It is the job of government to protect its citizens, therefore your logic leads to immigration control. In the good old days before Brexit, migrant workers did a lot of the seasonal work in agriculture in the UK. Similarly, tradesmen from other countries were quite prepared to work in remote locations where “indigenous” tradesmen were reluctant. The UK has an aging population, it needs more able-bodied young workers. If the government manages to stimulate the economy, there will quite quickly follow a shortage in the labour market. Statistically, by working and paying tax, immigrants make a small net contribution to GDP. The costs come from not allowing them to work.

  33. Like fossil fuels, this move is ferocious opposed by the farming lobby, who are a very powerful block in Britain, in the US and in Europe. When I learned about this, 50 (yes, fifty) years ago, I gave up meat as the most inefficient land use and cruelest way to get protein. While small amounts of animal protein are pleasant sometimes, and for a few people, necessary, the vast majority of the human population do no need to eat meat. With so many of us on the planet and so many eating meat, it’s time for a change, right now!

In the unreal “free market” economy, yes unlimited immigration would lower wages, but in the real world that effect is minimal due to appropriate minimum wage laws and the reluctance of British workers to do some jobs. Doctors are well paid, the underemployment of doctors is not related to immigration but to government policy. Housing shortages and other social paucities are also the result of government action, or inaction. Immigration just makes that more obvious. Homelessness in Finland has been eradicated by … building homes. What a novel idea! Immigrants are simply a convenient scapegoat to distract the public from government failings.

Exams are organised to make them easier to be marked by computer. The idea of allowing the student to display his/her talents and knowledge doesn't even register.   61. I have travelled extensively in Russia. On all but commuter trains, a ticket guarantees you a seat. The trains are clean, comfortable, and punctual. This is achieved by providing sufficient rolling stock and sufficient regular services. My experience of Virgin trains has been that they are often late or cancelled and frequently overcrowded. Booking a seat on Virgin means you might, possibly get one.

  71. I read “A very British Coup” just before Corbyn became leader. It was inevitable that, like Michael Foot, he would be destroyed by the established powers in this and other countries.
