  1. I was in Ireland just before and up to the day the troubles started. There were no watch towers, no barbed wire, indeed the border checks were just a nod. Now the Unionists are behaving again like petulant children who can’t get the toy they want. It was this bloody minded intransigent refusal to give proper democratic representation to the Catholics minority that lead to the original outbreak of violence in 1969. Bloody Sunday was a response to the IRA and others killing British soldiers who were there to try to keep the two sides apart. Peace was brought about by Tony Blair after he ended the obdurate Tory policy of refusing to talk until the IRA layer down their arms; a policy absolutely guaranteed to perpetuate the violence, civil war. There’s no need for violence now. The Irish (well most Irish) know how to compromise and enjoy life, but again we have boneheaded Tories in Westminster.
