As with uranium, the main concern is the waste product. 500 years is a very long time in human terms, just think of the technologies of the 16th century; horses were the fastest transport, waterwheels were the engines of "industry" (milling, sawing timber, weaving). 10,000 years for the half life (HALF life!) is about an entirely other, unimaginable civilisation (IF humans survive that long).
