The Russian While birch is a nice hard wood when kept dry, it grows fast, and is pretty soil tolerant. What else was native? Aspen? (Not much use). Pines? Other conifers?

@damionkeeling3103 I hope they grow Siberian Larch.. It's slow growing, but the wood is exquisite, strong, durable, workable and beautiful, for both furniture and external use.
