Funny, because ours was based on farming, probably for beer. And Frank Herbert didn't say that, he had one of his characters say that so quote the character at least.

You miss the point. People want to be able to be a separate entity from the group while still being in the group. They don't want to be some cog in the machine like what communists want, they want to be recognized for the things they do and achieve on their own even if it's contributing to the group. Clothing has nothing to do with it, since most societies tend to dress in similar ways, but some have the option to wear it styled differently or use certain colors or patterns.
