  2. VAZ 2101 was a more upmarket model than Moskvitch (AZLK) . Actually, Moskvitch fell from favour by mid 1970s , the sales were so bad the Government offered an interest free loan. People, who had money to buy a car, which was a very expensive purchase in the USSR, prefered VAZ and Volga(GAZ 24), there was a waiting list for VAZ (~ 2 years) and Volga (~4 years). Some VAZ models, like VAZ 2103 and VAZ 2106, were considered close to Volga(GAZ 24) by the level of luxury and prestige.
