She was brave to speak out.

The more stories like this one I hear the more I begin to understand Chinese and sometimes questions I have regarding Chinese I know, including an Ex I have, begin to make more and more sense. Mainland Chinese live in a world of social pressures with the family being the smallest and it extends to friends and even work. I am sure many in their minds have a lot they want to scream but they can't because they are not accustomed to challenging these pressures. In many ways it reminds me of the Ingram Experiment where psychologists wanted to understand how perfectly good men would go along with an absolutely evil act. In that experiment it typically had to do with an authority figure giving commands in Asia it's a person's social circle and family giving the commands. This is quite disturbing in my mind because it means Chinese mainlanders are very much like slaves with a series of masters each one agreeing, without challenge, to the one above them. To make matters worse you have the custom of saving face which means they can literally be shamed into submission. I think this is really what happened to my ex and I think she tried to tell me in her own way but couldn't because she didn't know how to and me, because I am not from this environment, I couldn't see what she was trying to do or even trying to tell me.

That actually comes to show the reality of seeing the bigger picture or claiming to look at the picture it's only true so long as the alleged picture is based in reality otherwise you are just setting yourself up for epic embarrassment.

@Anna-po1sb I am curious if you have ever heard the name Nathan Hale. He was patriot, soldier and spy for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War against Britain. His profession was as a journalist. On September 22 1776 he was tried and Hanged by the British Army. Hale's last words were reportedly " How Beautiful is death, when earned by virtue! Who would not be that youth? What pity is it that we can die but once to serve our country."

This is heartbreaking to see these people being brainwashed like this. Some of my best friends back in college were from China and this is happening to their kids it's unbelievable. I suppose it was anticipated though. Once they figured out the reason many of their people were not on board with the CCP and many of these very same people actually went to the west for more than a year it was only a matter of time before they started vilifying the USA. The good news is it's too little too late the damage, if you want to call it that, is already done. Most Chinese people know the world for what it truly is or was at least exposed to it enough to be able to fight against this. The CCP is already scared to death of their own people they wouldn't resort to this if they weren't. With good reason to, the average Chinese citizen has had it up to their eyeballs with the CCPs BS and everyone and their mother knows it. They are on the brink of what could be a full blown revolt similar to the Irish war for Independence. This is assuming the most recent protests are preludes to escalation much like the Easter Uprising in Ireland.

@七月-x8q You are going to have to clarify because your translations a little confusing. I am going to assume you disagreed with the whole statement. So I am going to say this can you speak against your friends, family or even the state if all of them say something you know is morally wrong? I will let you take your pick on what that may be. Now I know what you have to say in order to save face so I am just going to make that a rhetorical question. You don't have to write your answer just think on it. If you answer yes I know you are just kidding yourself. I have lived in Asia for 6 years I have seen people say yes to dumb ideas because their friends said yes so I know it does happen. Nothing you say can convince me otherwise because I have actually witnessed it. So if I am wrong then my eyes must be wrong because that's what I am basing my statement on. That's those questions I mentioned they were things I have witnessed people I know who are chinese actually do. Try again.

@perniciousseizurehellio3438 It's mostly personal and I wish to keep it that way. It was only in the past 5 years that I managed to figure out why she wouldn't even listen to me. Her friends and family made certain of that. The fact I wanted to learn what happened might give you an idea how heartbreaking it was. It just never left my mind. I appreciate you asking though. It does mean a lot.

I have always loved Chinese people but never trusted the Chinese government. In fact I am a firm believer that sooner or later everyone is going to have to come to terms with the reality of China whether they like it or not. Maybe not today maybe not tomorrow but just this thing in Hong Kong alone is starting to make people realize supporting their government is akin to selling your soul to the devil. An extreme parallel maybe but one that is probably not far from the truth.

No wonder it's blatantly BS. These people are probably deliberately making it obvious so that everyone, with a brain at least, knows its BS.

It really made my day I don't know about everybody else on this thread.

I think for Pelosi she did it just to have some kind of win over 45 because he is very very very pro Taiwan and she knew that he was going to make an issue over it. Also in her district she is desperate for votes and thought this would get her the Asian American vote. It won't, I think the damage is already done even if she passed herself off as mother Teresa she is still done in Congress as a whole and it is way past the point of no return. I am always open to the possibility of being wrong but let's face it when November hits I doubt anybody is going to be thinking of this one win for her because she has pulled too much BS over the past 4 years for anyone to even care. But then again I could be wrong.

I am just curious but do any of them actually ask an American?

@ryan8374 and they wonder why everyone calls BS on their propaganda.

Ccp " oh we study history we never repeat the same mistakes the idiots of the past made which pissed everyone off" Everybody that actually read Chinese history " Really, then what's this you blundering gaggle of genetic defects."

@七月-x8q it's fine but at least you are practicing which is always good. Ok so then we don't necessarily disagree.

@七月-x8q I want to ask you a sincere question. Please answer honestly, now I am asking you this question because you are Chinese, or at least I think you are do correct me if I am wrong. In Chinese culture, or asian, if someone does something they know is morally wrong and hurt someone close to them, a lover for example or maybe a close friend, how do you reconcile. Keep in mind in this circumstance I am talking about the guilty one. Not a serious offense or crime but definitely hurtful. I ask this because it seems to me that once someone is guilty of something it is very hard for that person to reconcile yet I know that friends will get back together, lovers will recouple or marry even, and sins or wrongful acts are forgiven even among Chinese people but it doesn't seem to happen very often.

So I was right. What criminologists refer to as the Dark Figure of crime is being deliberately hidden. In case anyone is unfamiliar with that term there are 2 types of statistics that can give you a near accurate idea of crime rate in any given area. One is reported crimes from police agencies who make arrests and the other are victimization reports of crimes where someone either fails to call the police but the victim reports it annonimously for whatever the reason maybe, which does happen, or maybe the police were called in but no one was arrested either because the trail had gone cold or there was not enough evidence to arrest someone. In the US these are called the National Crime Report or NCR and the NVS or National Victimization Survery. When these two statistics overlap they give what's referred to as the Dark Figure of Crime.
