She was brave to speak out.

The more stories like this one I hear the more I begin to understand Chinese and sometimes questions I have regarding Chinese I know, including an Ex I have, begin to make more and more sense. Mainland Chinese live in a world of social pressures with the family being the smallest and it extends to friends and even work. I am sure many in their minds have a lot they want to scream but they can't because they are not accustomed to challenging these pressures. In many ways it reminds me of the Ingram Experiment where psychologists wanted to understand how perfectly good men would go along with an absolutely evil act. In that experiment it typically had to do with an authority figure giving commands in Asia it's a person's social circle and family giving the commands. This is quite disturbing in my mind because it means Chinese mainlanders are very much like slaves with a series of masters each one agreeing, without challenge, to the one above them. To make matters worse you have the custom of saving face which means they can literally be shamed into submission. I think this is really what happened to my ex and I think she tried to tell me in her own way but couldn't because she didn't know how to and me, because I am not from this environment, I couldn't see what she was trying to do or even trying to tell me.

@Anna-po1sb I am curious if you have ever heard the name Nathan Hale. He was patriot, soldier and spy for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War against Britain. His profession was as a journalist. On September 22 1776 he was tried and Hanged by the British Army. Hale's last words were reportedly " How Beautiful is death, when earned by virtue! Who would not be that youth? What pity is it that we can die but once to serve our country."

@七月-x8q You are going to have to clarify because your translations a little confusing. I am going to assume you disagreed with the whole statement. So I am going to say this can you speak against your friends, family or even the state if all of them say something you know is morally wrong? I will let you take your pick on what that may be. Now I know what you have to say in order to save face so I am just going to make that a rhetorical question. You don't have to write your answer just think on it. If you answer yes I know you are just kidding yourself. I have lived in Asia for 6 years I have seen people say yes to dumb ideas because their friends said yes so I know it does happen. Nothing you say can convince me otherwise because I have actually witnessed it. So if I am wrong then my eyes must be wrong because that's what I am basing my statement on. That's those questions I mentioned they were things I have witnessed people I know who are chinese actually do. Try again.

@perniciousseizurehellio3438 It's mostly personal and I wish to keep it that way. It was only in the past 5 years that I managed to figure out why she wouldn't even listen to me. Her friends and family made certain of that. The fact I wanted to learn what happened might give you an idea how heartbreaking it was. It just never left my mind. I appreciate you asking though. It does mean a lot.

@七月-x8q it's fine but at least you are practicing which is always good. Ok so then we don't necessarily disagree.

@七月-x8q I want to ask you a sincere question. Please answer honestly, now I am asking you this question because you are Chinese, or at least I think you are do correct me if I am wrong. In Chinese culture, or asian, if someone does something they know is morally wrong and hurt someone close to them, a lover for example or maybe a close friend, how do you reconcile. Keep in mind in this circumstance I am talking about the guilty one. Not a serious offense or crime but definitely hurtful. I ask this because it seems to me that once someone is guilty of something it is very hard for that person to reconcile yet I know that friends will get back together, lovers will recouple or marry even, and sins or wrongful acts are forgiven even among Chinese people but it doesn't seem to happen very often.
