During 1920s and 1930s, The Red army frequently crossed into Afghanistan to eliminate basmachi islamist rebels or to Aid the Govt of Afghanistan / sultan against potential regime changes and rebellions which they did.

  4.  @JL-tm3rc  no they didn't . in the end , the DRA collapse itself showed that All the soviets did was in vain . same to what happen to US in both Afghanistan and Vietnam. I see no difference . The Soviets , US , Brits came and yet nobody was about to stay longer in Afghanistan . Only The Persians have the longest record of having Afghanistan under their control .
