They have better armor and Better tech, but not the numbers by the previous Imperial standards. also that makes it a nightmare for Japanese govt to maintain the advanced tech in JSDF for a long period of time in case of war of attrition breaks out. Don't forget that Japan can be easily invaded from the North , since Northern Areas are less hilly and More covered in Forests , and Russian army don't give a single sht for those Forests. Also this is Not Taiwan. only it will take 2-3 hours to land in troops from Sakhalin to Hokkaido only by a Bridge . and less than an Half an Hour if by Fast landing boats and Paratroopers. Russia has only to cut off Hokkaido from Rest of Japan especially Honshu and it's game over for Japan if Hokkaido is lost to Russians.

Russia had experience in amphibious assaults, because they had to cross rivers after rivers to reach Germany and unlike seas , those rivers are densely packed and perfect turkey shoot ground for german defenders.

@Silent_Speaker Think again , who does Sakhalin and Kuril Belongs to? Soviets would have marched straight to Tokyo , if not Trumann warned Stalin of severe consequences. The Soviets assembled 2.5 million men and more than 10000 Armored Vehicles alone, about a Thousand or More Planes and also kind of 3 light Guns , 2 Anti tank guns , 2 Medium artillery of 122mm and a heavy 152mm for every Company sized troops, there to aid Western allies in case . Soviets were ready. And this is Not Taiwan where a sizeable Body of water and western Steep Coastlines can make nightmare for PLA troops that have not such experience in Amphibious materials neither have materials nor naval vessels to carry out operation. The Soviets were carrying out amphibious assaults and river crossings under heavy firing in the Eastern front. and they also carried out their own successful island hopping campaign in the retake of Kuril Islands (the geographic terrains are also tough , hilly , ideal for defenders and a nightmare for any amphibious troops) . still almost half of the islands were taken by Military actions , rest by Surrender. and Sakhalin was just done in 5 days despite a hardcore resistance by 20,000+ men. And not Every area of Japan is geographically impossible for Invaders to conquer. The Northern Half especially Hokkaido is prone to both Amphibious and Ground launch invasion. All Russia have to do is to destroy important and hidden bases , EMP Blast Hokkaido / Sabotage Communications and Power lines in Hokkaido , Secure a very narrow Water strait between Sakhalin and Hokkaido, Build a Bridge , secure the Water way and half of Japan is screwed either way. Russia lost the first war for sure with disastrous losses because of heavy corruption and moles in Armed forces and incompetent upper house. But after reforms supervised by Putin, they successfully Retook Chechen without heavy losses unlike the first war. USSR was bound to fail economically because of communist policies ruining their economy. But Now Russia is an open market Capitalist Nation.
