What most people in the Comment section won't realise is that Sri Lanka back from 1983 till 2009 was in the grip of a bloodied civil war between Sinhala majority Govt and armed forces and the Tamil minority insurgency led by LTTEin the North from Jaffna in the North to Batticaloa in the South East alongside another communist insurgency in thr south central known by JVP. And to add woes , ltte was doing a campaign of sea piracy and suicide bombings in capital city of Colombo. So it was way worse when a Tsunami hit in 2004. But this Tsunami was actually a boon in disguise for the Sri Lankan army since the regions that were mostly affected were under ltte control and their sea wing, the sea tigers , lost a significant strength of their naval arsenal . Adding according to Karuna, the commander of the East , Pravhakaran the leader of ltte refused to help him or cooperate with Sri lankan govt which eventually led to his defection to the govt side. Hence reasons why the fourth Eelam war was a decisive and finalised Sri Lankan govt and military victory.
