Because if you see , The EIC primarily used native Bengal & Bombay Infantry regiments against the Sikhs & other princely states , & during the 1857 war, Half of Bengal troops in the EIC mutinied & joined the rebel ranks . So that was like "hey you didn't help us when we needed you the most but helped our enemy instead , so why should we you now ? " This exactly also played down in the south India as well but much more earlier , especially in Madras with the Vellore mutiny , Madras landlords mutiny & Godavari kaveri Mutiny , where many troops of Native Madras regiments rebelled against the EIC & Bengal & Bombay infantry has been used to supress the revolts
