But also, "cool software" exists on all platforms, it's just that most "cool software" has been known about for years, decades while the other "cool software" is a copy of whatever the known "cool software" is. I think where Linux based distributions have historically failed is that at this point, a desktop experience that isn't driver troubleshooting hell or some kind of ridiculous learning curve that casual computer users literally could not care less about undertaking is pretty much about the only thing that isn't the norm already. Plus, as someone commented above: it's easier to sell people something than give it away for free, especially since the concept of "free" is almost universally synonymous with the concept of "problematic"
