THAT is true with the maritime industry AND the aviation industry Many times agents from the company who did the construction have to be called in to figure out what is going on I remember one time a SAAB 340 aircraft left the maintenance hangar and took off for a test flight and their propellors feathered automatically while in the air for NO obvious reason. Somehow they got them back and landed. Had to get people from SAAB SWEDEN to come over to figure it out. Turned out to be some chaffed wiring down in the belly of the airplane

I have been to ROTTERDAM's container port and it's pretty amazing, all totally automated and nobody around Guess if someone ran over my dog, nobody would be there to help As opposed to FELIXSTOWE UK, the gate guards started to give me some shit about riding my bike back to the ship and I just said screw it and took off, made it back onboard before they could catch me WHO ? WHAT BIKE ?

THEY usually use large fenders to keep the ships apart, and use their morring lines to keep together I used to do AT SEA replenishment transfers- that is you send over a wire cable and connect the ships, then you send over the transfering hose and it's connected on the other ship, then you start pumping. ALL this is happening when the ships are moving, roughly 5 knots.

  5. The straits of Sungapore are very dangerous My tanker was coming around the corner and had another ship cutting the corner who would have T-boned us if we hadn'g gone hard over. I was relaxing and had to stand up and look out the port to see what just almost happened

  7. Remember doing at sea replenishment (usually jet fuel and diesel) while working on an MSC chartered SUNOCO tanker MV NEW YORK SUN with some of the oilers in the middle of the IO : USNS Mispillion etc Let's not forget what MSC stands for ; MORE SHIT COMING

NOT CORRECT The heavier LOADED ship has a DEEPER DRAFT, therefore needs MORE WATER under it to transit the locks That is more or less true of ALL SHIPS, whether smaller with less cargo or bigger with more cargo. They are designed to have a max capacity for any port by draft AND, the old locks in Panama were only wide enough to take regular beam of ships then With the NEW MAXI lane in the canal, they made the width WIDER to accomodate ANY ship - AT THAT TIME. ONE DAY ships might be even wider and can't pass through this wider canal

  14. Most ships have CO2 but that is usually for engineroom fires They DO have fire lines all over the ship with access to water Plus nearby any decent sized port there are going to be firefighting boats available

  15. SAL - WOW, you hit a nerve with this UNION THING Part of the reason I quit sailing was that in the US, all the unions were jealous of the others ; MMP, MEBA, SIU and the Radio unions. The members of say MEBA were sweating their asses off in the ER while I - the MREO sat in my air conditioned quiet office and worked days AND made more money than they did ! MMP HATED the MEBA too, I suspect ALL the MEBA engineers were JEALOUS of ALL other officers on the ship because MEBA members had the only SHIT job down in the bowels of the ship and the MMP (Captains and Mates) TOLD them what to do ! THAT is why many captains were called Capt BLIGH because THEY were really the bosses of everyone, but were NOT superior to others. Lot of non mates hated the bad Captains NO WAY you could combine all the unions, even if you did, one faction will always be jealous of another

  17. THE HULL is grounded but that means nothing when you have tanks full of gasoline or fuel vapors that can explode by any spark caused by humans or whatever. It's NOT a matter of being grounded, it's the explosive vapors that are the problem

  22. These kinds of vessels do not have open fuel or combustable liquid tanks They have sealed fuel tanks, so it fireworks land on the deck, there is nothing to catch fire or explode

  24. Well, you'd be surprised, one of my ships had an engineroom fire and needed to be totally redone, and they did it. This ship is lucky because ONLY the tanks were involved, would think it could be repaired

  26. SAL ... how old is this ship and who built it ? Mitsibushi ? FUJI ? Those transformers could have some kind of internal breakdown electrically, if so, they would surely trip the breakers. They would have to be load tested and ohmed out Could be some BAD main breakers too, maybe corroded internally or overloaded or just OLD I assume the refrigerated containers are back aft and not on the bow ? Will be interesting to see what is inside those crushed containers forward, assume non perishable items, can be recontainerized or if it's food, donated locally rather than trashed You're right about ship engineers - they KNOW the mechanics of the ship but FEW understand electricity and electrical systems, good mechanics but not great electricians ! Had to intervene occasionally on some weird electrical problem Just an old retired MREO and miss shipping and cruising the world !

  33.  @DAVIDMILLER-nc9vo  well, the big thing is how deep is the water and what is the ship's draft. The Panama canal locks are stepped up or down depending on which direction you are going. Think the inside lake is HIGHER than either side- PACIFIC OR CARIBBEAN sides, so coming IN you go UP, exiting the last lock to the ocean you go DOWN.

Have owned 3 big boats and LOVE SAILING the gulf coast of Florida I am a retired union Radio Officer MM too so I do appreciate your videos. Worked on many MSC chartered ships ; USNS Cape (Charleston) RO-RO;s, tankers. Only thing I miss is the travel. HAPPY to be RETIRED living in Brasil on $600 a month ! Try doing that in the US !

  36. NO, the anchor LINE is polyester and does not conduct electricity. The METAL structure of one ship MUST to electrically connect to the other ship, usually a copper cable like car jumper cables but much longer

  41. Talking about BAD weather ..... I spend a few winters on the Prince Willian Sound, the largest tanker at the time - 80's hauling Alaskan crude out of Valdez Alaska Many times the N Pacific winters were so rough that we would have to turn west after coming out, then head south to Ferndale Wa and California I believe the draft fully loaded was like 60 feet but we rolled like a dinghy 45 degrees. Blew my mind with that draft fully loaded the seas were so rough to roll and pound that much. Even had some permanently attached furniture breaking free and acting like battering rams against the interior of those rooms Had anotheer incident coming out of the Delaware river Philly empty headed to Puerto Rico just as hurricane HUGO was headed north up the coast. Was an old split house 50's tanker and we had to turn north for quite a while before we could change course east then south the weather was that bad. We had seas breaking over the foredeck crossing to the other side and the rolling was at least 45 degrees being light, was a wild ride. Worked on a NOAA Oceanographic ship off the coast of Califirnia, ship was about 110 feet long and rolled like a beast offshore. I could look out the porthole and see the ocean, then as it rolled see the sky, back and forth LUCKILY I have never been seasick even in such rough weather, all of it very amusing to me !

  50. Ship to Ship is the only thing needed, since they are where the spark will come from, ocean water has nothing to do with it They are NOT going to be INERTING the tanks with crewmembers IN THERE cleaning, only afterwards, looks like the crew caused the explosion when down in the unclean tanks
