With herd immunity, 3.5% UK death rate (55 out of 1550 tested positive) there will be 1.45 million deaths if and when 60% get the virus.

What a contrast. Macron acts. Johnson dithers.

Yeah, keep open the schools. The death rate in the UK is 3.5% so far, which is in line with other countries. The death rate in Italy is higher. If 80% of the population gets the virus (which is what Jonson is saying) with a death rate of 3.5% then 1.96 million will die. That compares with 326,000 UK deaths in the Second World War.

Rob Fahey You are probably speading the virus, especially if you are in London, now the UK centre of the pandemic. Are you also using the tube?

This just exposed what a lot of nonsense Brexit is. The government will have the money to bail out all these big business run by people who bang on about free markets and as soon as there's a crisis want government money. In 1940 Churchill and Labour formed a coalition to take matters in hand -- Johnson is a disgrace, it's like Neville Chamberlain all over again. The rotten edifice of neoliberal populism is exposed for all to see. Younger people have died, especially in areas with bad air quality. The centre of the pandemic in England is London. Why doesn't Boris Johnson take the tube to show it's a great idea? He can also visit a few schools. But of course he won't, and neither will Farage.

UK medical chief said today he reckons there are 55,000 cases (they don't know because there's very little testing). At 3,5% death rate that's about 2,000 deaths. The NHS has already stopped all non-essential stuff and are sending patients home. The 'herd immunity' the government talks about requires 60% of the population to get the vitus - which at 3.5% would be 1.47 million deaths. At 1%, assuming the rate slows down and vulnerable groups are isolated, it would be 420,000. Either way it's more than the 326,000 killed in the Second World War. Like 1940, Labour should demand a national government of those prepared to recognise there is a national emergency and prepared to deal with it.

@shoelessjoe428 That seems logical to me. I'm concerned that in the biggest crisis since the Second World War the prime minister is a proven liar. This isn't a matter of left and right, it's a matter of the whe country pulling together, as in the Second World War, and I think that like 1940 there should be a national government. Johnson's appeasement strategy hasn't worked.

@mylordandsaviour4786 The private sector is looking to the state for intervention/help, as always happens in such crises. US had largest health spend per person in the world and it's clear the health system can't cope as well as European countries with organised 'socialised' system. Call it socialism if you like, I don't care as long as it works.
