The conflict is not between Russia and Ukraine - it is between East & West Ukraine, fought mostly in the East (which is ethnic Russian) and it began after the elected government was overthrown in a coup in 2014, and when the new government of Petro Poroshenko sent forces in to start attacking East Ukraine. These attacks have been going on for 8 years and led to a brief war in 2014. Russia finally became directly involved when shelling of East Ukraine intensified and Kiev troops began to amass on the border. East Ukraine invited them in to end this once and for all. If only the media over here wasn't lying about the entire situation this conflict would be over and both sides could start reconstructing their lives.
