Does Hitchens not realise that the Ukraine army began intensive shelling of East Ukraine over 2 weeks ago despite numerous diplomatic efforts to stop this - attacks had been ongoing against East Ukraine for years, even after the Minsk (peace) agreement was signed. Donetsk and Luhansk asked Russia in the face of this latest attack to recognise them as independent states (which Russia finally did 2 weeks ago after years of resisting this). Russia also rejected attempts by Donetsk to join the Russian federation in 2014. Hardly the stance of a country that intends to invade and expand for territory.
