In fact Ukraine forces had been shelling and attacking (mainly ethnic Russian) East Ukraine for some time now: they were preparing in the last few months for a major offensive while the Russians were trying to prevent it through diplomatic means: last week Ukraine forces began shelling Donbass (East Ukraine) in violation of the Minsk Agreement: as a result Donetsk and Luhansk (East Ukraine) asked Russia to recognise them as independent states: Russia finally did so earlier this week and then moved into defend that region and push out Ukrainian forces that had launched an incursion into East Ukraine. It is as simple as that. Whether people choose to believe this is no longer relevant to me but this is what happened regardless of what the same media who sold us Iraq's wmds is telling us.
