She assaulted him, first. I'm not saying what he did was right - but she grabbed him by the belt from behind and aggressively wrenched him backwards: an action like that is always going to cause an immediate and instinctive reaction.

@rogerivy2919 I agree completely: the way she acted was guaranteed to escalate.

No: she grabbed him by the belt from behind and aggressively dragged him backwards - that action is guaranteed to cause an instinctive reaction and an escalation. She didn't de-escalate anything.

@crit7898 It was assault, what she did is legally defined as assault - she assaulted him, he then assaulted her. They both assaulted each other.

@Bangtanlicious-ev3sn Dear oh dear: if you're going to tell someone to look up the definition of assault, then at least look up the definition yourself first. In answer to your question: yes, I was once grabbed from behind in the middle of a violent altercation: and at that moment the chap I was up against (and he was a violent psycho) could have done anything, because I was being pulled away from him, so I was immediately on the back foot. Mind you, the guy who grabbed me from behind got what he deserved when psycho then turned on him and decked him with a punch in the face. So yes, it was assault - and the idiot who thought he was de-escalating actually put me in a very dangerous spot by grabbing me from behind and trying to pull me away. If he had stood between us that would have been different - but grabbing me from behind: as well as assault it made things worse. He earned a black eye for his folly, too.
