  1. East or West Ukraine? This conflict is between East and West Ukraine and began in 2014 when the new government began attacking East Ukraine which is mainly ethnic Russian. Moscow tried for 8 years to diplomatically end it but with no results. In February the Ukraine military began intense shelling of Donbass (East Ukraine) while troops amassed on the border - East Ukraine reacted - and asked for Russia's help in its defence.
