I think what you all don’t understand is that many Americans especially those who never lived abroad do not care about what happens outside of America and are firm believers of American exceptionalism. They honestly think that nothing that happens outside of the U.S. can possibly be worth anything. It has been ingrained for a long time with them. It blows the average Americans minds when they go to another country and see even basic things like a beautiful airport or transportation working and realize that in many ways Americans can even compare with developing countries on these things. I speak as an American who loves his country but is painfully aware of its failings.

For all the other people who may not understand global politics here are some important points to consider: 1. Remember that Russia, US and China all have ambitions to be the world leader and most powerful country. Only the U.S. is right now but Russia and China don’t like this. They have been influencing politics and events around the world for years. Why do you think in the Middle East for example Russia is funding and supporting Syria, Iran and arms them as well as Hamas and Hizbollah against the US backed Israel? Or why is China pumping billions into Africa for almost no payback? Don’t be naive guys, it is not about poor Putin feeling slighted. 2. Reason why Gorby opened Russia is because the Russian economy was tanking. Same thing for China and most other communist countries. Even now thought Russian has a standard of living below even Mexico. 3. Why are countries joining NATO? Or is specifically because of the threat that Russia is giving them. They want to know that NATO will protect them if Russia attack we is the NATO aim. 4. Ukraine is independent and 90% of Ukraine voted to be independent. 5. Putin’s aims have always been about brining back the glory of the Soviet Union. His aim is to take back the countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union. 6. Don’t make this whole thing about American politics, or Dems vs Republicans. The reality is that Russia and China are never going to be happy until they are the most powerful power. So all you Americans, are you happy for that to happen. Just look at the type of regimes that Russia and China have. Their people live in fear and have none of the rights we have in the U.S. do you really want them to win this battle? 7. Don’t forget Putin has realized a long time ago that sowing internal unrest in countries is a potent weapon and they have been doing this actively in the U.S. as well as Europe and Asia. This is all part of the KGB playbook. 8. Don’t be fooled guys, we have problems in the US but nothing compared to how Russians and Chinese live their lives no matter what Tucker Carlson says. Like I said, Russians have a lower standard of living than Mexico!

I am all for revamping the system but why are we so confident that the state knows so much better? Let’s also compare this funding model with the best performing countries? Again the funding model is predominantly federal which has served them well. So what is the issue then? The US is one of the only countries in the world with a minimal standardize system. The closest is the SAT which is only for 2 subjects. Solving a 10% problem which is 0.05% of the National Budget is clearly for reasons other than educational. Prove me wrong.

He is basically saying that the 10% of school funding that comes from the federal government is responsible for poor education and high costs in less advantaged school systems. Do you honestly think that is the case? Think about all the issues present in a low income disadvantaged district has? I do agree though that the education in the U.S. is far behind most of the top performing countries. Those countries by the way are countries with a predominately federal funding mechanism.

Who gave US the right to decide what other sovereign countries do at US borders - At US border, the US has the right to make the decisions since it is a sovereign country. 2. Why other countries which are several times bigger than US don’t? - I believe that all sovereign countries have the right to protect its borders. 3. Was this part of the post WW2 agreements? - I think the right to protect your own country has existed for a long time even before WW2. Did I understand you correctly?

  14. @ problem is that unfortunately poorer less advantaged districts have a huge problem getting teachers in general and definitely not the best teachers. Nothing to do with the federal department but rather what is being done at a state and local level which especially for underserved areas is a tough job.

  15. @ I know about the Monroe doctrine but it was from the 1800s and has been reinterpreted since the 1930s. The U.S. usually puts bases on sovereign countries which allow it to to also take advantage of U.S. help if the enemies near it get into war. This is the case in Europe and Asia etc. the U.S. can’t just set up a base if a sovereign country does not allow it to. What is your point? NATO was established to be a safeguard against the Russian threat as is the case now.

  24. Rent control and government backed services are not a new thing. The threats of outmigration have been there for years and property prices in both Texas and Florida increased during COVID. They are also now some of the top places where outmigration is happening and property prices getting depressed. There must be a better way besides just catering to the richest people.

The chances of that ever happening are very slim. That being said, most countries see China and Russian as military threats that is the reason for all the war games etc. why would they want to invite a threat into their country? We are basically cutting departments and agencies that have been put in by the very people we elected to represent us without consultation or debate just taken away. This is not what a democratically elected government does. Then start looking at why certain things are cut. I am all for cutting waste and improving things but let’s first look at the Consumer Financial Bureau. It implements U.S. consumer finance laws and issues new rules for lenders and other financial institutions, such as one announced last year to wipe medical debt from credit reports. The CFPB also goes after companies it suspects of dishonest or illegal activity. Ask yourself who would want to stop this? If they are wasting money, reveal what the waste is and let them defend it or prosecute them why are they just cutting a protection agency? This is exactly what big banks want so that they can increase profits without any governance. Don’t trust me, check out exactly what they do and see if that is the America we want to live in where the richest people can exploit the poorest and most uneducated.

Just looking at the numbers it just doesn’t make sense that 10% of the spending is causing 100% of the problem. To extrapolate your argument, why do we even need the state departments? Why don’t we take that 45% of the funding and put it into the local agencies? I am all for eliminating waste, but someone has to come up with a better plan than just cut something.

I think the point that Cenk and Anna don’t understand is not whether tariffs are good or bad but rather how to use tariffs in a good way to help us but also not just randomly use them as a negotiation tactic because that is the only tool you have and hurt our relationship with our friends and allies. The fact of the matter is that if you tariff steel and aluminium you will affect a lot of industries because you are increasing costs for consumer and while you can then give back subsidies to companies or farmers to compensate them for this, the ordinary consumer suffers and inflation rises. Also you cause a lot of chaos in the world when diplomacy can work equally well. America is very quickly losing its leadership in the world as a strong democratic leader who is fair. No difference between Putin and the U.S. now. We just take what we want and threaten our allies when we want to.

  70. @ thanks for clarifying but from what I understand the American people bear the cost of the tariffs and this only works when there are equivalent goods being sold that compete with it. For example if an iPhone made in China costs 10% cheaper than an American made one then it makes sense. In our case most of the goods we use are made overseas and it will take years to be able to get to the situation where we have viable alternatives. Even then there is no way we can compete with goods manufactured by people who earn less than $10 a day which wont even cover our health insurance. Saying that tariffs can take the place of income tax seems to be a pipe dream and even so, don’t we already have a sales tax that has the same purpose? Essentially we are adding a goods and service tax to offset income taxes no? So essentially we pay more for goods that we need in the hope that one day manufacturing comes back to the U.S. and is cheaper that China? Seems like a far fetched plan! 😂

  81. Basically democracy gets in the way of progress sometimes. In the case of Singapore quite a few things were done that could never have been done in other countries. The key difference is the focus was on improving the country and not personal wealth accumulation. LKY also made sure that he had the longest lasting ruling government in the world which helped because it wasn’t about what was going to happen in 2 or 4 years and they could really work on. Long term plans such as housing, defence, education and economic development. Not without flaws, but truly a remarkable leader especially considering he was just a young man in his 30s when he took over the country, after the British fled and getting kicked out of the Malayan federation.

No matter who the president is, there have always been checks and balances and the power of the judiciary and this has been the case since our founding. Even Biden had to back down with their executive orders when judges ruled against him. There is a difference between a constitutional republic and a monarchy. So if your argument is that federal judges cannot rule against the president then what about the Supreme Court? Show me where the constitution states what you mention?

Speaking as a foreigner, I think it is also understandable that for many people who have lived in the UK with a certain racial majority and population the influx of foreigner is difficult to accept and understand. It is all about doing all of this in a way that helps the native population not feel intimidated within reason.   383. @ well said. We are too insular in the US. We think what we do is always the best and never even bother checking if someone is doing it better with some exceptions. Standards are slipping generally. Even in states like Massachusetts which is renowned for its education standards,they just voted overwhelmingly for not making standardized test compulsory for high school graduation. The reality is that putting the standards of education to a mostly less learned population is a recipe for failure. You already see this clearly in our best schools. Post of the post graduates are not from the U.S.
