  1. I live in a university town in the Midwest U.S. and the rents are sky-high. The rental market is more and more geared to August-to-August leases because so many renters are college students. I USED TO have an October-to-October lease. I live in a small efficiency apartment and pay a rent that elsewhere could get me something much larger. Just to rent a room can cost up to $700 per month. I refer to Bloomington, Indiana, as "mini-Manhattan". There are thousands of luxurious rental units geared toward college students who have to come from affluent families. I took college classes starting in 1979 and lived in a 10 by 10 cinderblock dorm room that had a phone box connecting with the room next door and the bathroom down the hall. There is now some on-campus student housing where residents are notified by computer when their laundry is done! When it comes to working people, many have to live far away from their jobs so as to have affordable housing.
