  1. It's been a while since I read the original story but I think the activity of the birds may have been connected with the tides. Also a while ago I've read about Daphne DuMaurier herself and my recollection is that there are several versions of how the story originated and I don't recall that she ever said what the story meant. The author may have just left it up to the reader. Since Alfred Hitchcock used only the premise of the story he may have implied meanings that Daphne DuMaurier didn't have in her short story---which is one of the most frightening things I've ever read!
