  1. I agree. Even when looking at Gary on a computer screen there such a sense of oppression and even danger. I was born there in 1961 though my family lived in a neighboring town. My grandparents lived in Gary until I was around nine or ten and left when many other white people were leaving. I don't recall much of the town, nothing in the video looks familiar. No way would I go back to Gary, Indiana.

  2. My mother grew up in Gary in the 30's and 40's and I believe that for part of that time she lived on Pierce Street.

  3. The closeness of houses in the U.S. depends on where you are. Some are only a few feet apart, others sit on large lots with plenty of room.

  5. My family lived in Crown Point when I was born in '61 but I was born in Gary where my grandparents lived. My father grew up in Hobart, my mother grew up in Gary.
