  1. Ken, my grandmother had a copy of "Steamboat Gothic" and I immediately recognized that dust jacket. In the novel, as I recall, the house was called St. Cloud, but pronounced "san cloo" in the French way, but the slaves called the house "Cindy Lou" and that became the name people recognized. I've read Lonnie Coleman's 1974 bestseller "Beulah Land", about the people on a Georgia plantation from about 1801 to 1861 and there are some descriptions of the house and grounds. I'd love to know if the Kendrick house in the novel was based on a real house or houses, and what the author envisioned when he wrote the novel.
