  1. What a mess. I have no answers or suggestions. Well, maybe one suggestion: Cash, I've mentioned this before and will do so again now. Maybe you and the family move out of New York? --- I also ride a bike. Temperature-wise my cut-off is 20 degrees instead of the 40 degrees you mentioned. If you ride your bike in temperatures below 40 you will get used to it and it will save money on train fare and possibly be safer as well.
