  1. When I see this old house I think of what has been lost. I've seen the movie "Washington Square" which takes place when a house such as this one would have been 30 years old at the most and when I compare what the original interior must have been like to the stark mostly-whiteness of what is now there I just feel sad. I wonder how many carved pillars and arched doorways and pocket doors have been removed. In fairness, though, since the house had been used for business, many of the original interior fixtures and features may have been removed many years or been too worn out to keep. We can be glad that this house from so far back in New York's history is still standing.
