Liberation or not, Southeast Asian leaders did collaborate extensively with the Japanese army. When I visited the Philippines in 2010, I went to an expat bar. Lo and behold, there was a Japanese elderly, sitting alone, who looked like about 88yo. Bartender said, he didn’t want to talk to anyone. I can totally understand why, if he was Hiro Onoda. Fortunately, his wife Machie had arranged a US$10,000 scholarship donation on his behalf to the local school there. However, you are right that Douglas MacArthur is still popular in the Philippines.
