Sounds strange, but that's the idea of alternative history. I could imagine liberals giving countries away, as happened in the decolonization of Africa.

teslagod2003 Sure it's always a mistake to get involved in the Balkans, but there was no conscription in Finland and it was a relatively prosperous time from 1869 onwards.

@jaspercorbyn8678 Finnish Guards' Rifle Battalion (1829-1905) was the only Finnish unit of the Russian Imperial Guard. In theory, the Finns could have been forcibly taken to war, but fortunately this was not the case. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Serbia In addition, my home town was White from the beginning, so there was no civil war in this area.

teslagod2003 Well, they conquered Finland in 1809 and sold Alaska in 1867, so during that period we were also Americans. For example, there were two Finnish governors in Alaska. Without the Bolshevik Revolution, the war that followed would have been a smaller border conflict.

@alexsilent5603 Although Stalin loosened his discipline during the war, he also converted churches into cinemas, barns, swimming pools etc. and blew up the Vyborg Synagogue. I wouldn't call him a believer. Granted, in the alternative timeline, he could have repented and become a priest to make a living.

@alexsilent5603 It's true that some sects read only certain parts without understanding the message of Bible, inventing a whole new religion. At least part of the Lutheran church is deeply communist. Marjaana Toiviainen is an (good / bad) example of such a person. Finnish idiom "lukea kuin piru Raamattua", well describes her beliefs. She read like the Devil reads the Bible.

@alexsilent5603 Communism is not my cup of tea, to put it politely: "A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression all your days." Deuteronomy 28 - New International Version - Curses for Disobedience

@alexsilent5603 On the other hand, nationalist administration can be quite effective. Our Supreme Leader was a pretty hardcore dude: https://www.bitchute.com/video/zfbeZG9Hv7PV/

They would have lost their sense of reality and participated anyway, like South Africa. I don't think either was the cradle of liberalism in 1941.

@billbolton Didn't South Rhodesia also commit suicide by supporting the British? Robert Mugabe's administration pulled down monuments making reference to the fallen of WW2.

@billbolton That's true, there is no WW2 without WW1. However, if you imagine the situation of 1941 as a separate war, then maybe they would have sent a volunteer Waffen-SS division "konföderieren".
