Lapland is no joke. You can lose your life even without the Red Army if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I think you're wrong about Ryti. He was more like Neville Chamberlain (under attack). The Greater Finland ideology was supported by Paavo Talvela and the fascists (Patriotic People's Movement), who received only about 6% of the vote. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paavo_Talvela

@artiombeknazaryan7542 Interestingly, Stalin was by chance the best nation-builder when compared to, say, Iraq. Indeed, Stalin removed Mannerheim from the list of war culprits because he considered him a guarantor of peace.

Yeah, right. I don't understand much of what even Estonians are talking about. There are also Finno-Ugric people in Saransk, 650km southeast of Moscow. "The fighting continues, and if we believe in the Enlightenment officers, we will not stop until Moscow belongs to Western Finland. But first, we take control of an important crossroads of Tsopina." -Nikke Pärmi Tšobino is a tiny village located on the Northern shore of Ääninen

Plus, they're late in in September 1944. First an organized retreat, then a ceasefire, and finally a casual march to the 1940 border. Excluding the Petsamo area in the north. https://youtu.be/-AUdP-QVEKA

They also escorted Soviet bombers over Finland. To my understanding the Anglo-Finnish War ended in December 1941.

Because the US is a republic. They even sent food together with Switzerland.

I have a hunch that their story is reminiscent of the movie Fury. You can think for yourself whether it is historically accurate or not. https://youtu.be/9eFq6BmieQ8

They did sentence 1488 people in prison for 6-months and a few scapegoats for a couple of years. Admittedly, partly also for domestic reasons. The size and activities of the Finnish army were limited, until Mauno Koivisto terminated the peace agreement in 1990. But you’re right that the majority of people never literally raised their hands and surrendered.

In addition, 8 people were sent to the Soviet Gulag, which pretty much ended the communist rule in Finland (people were fuhrerious).

It's a bit like relations between Serbia and the Warsaw Pact. Yugoslav Army maintained two official defense plans, one against a NATO invasion and one against a Warsaw Pact invasion.

@johnburns4017 Such is conditional surrender. Urho Kekkonen under Andrei Zhdanov directed the trials in Finland until 1947, thus it can be characterized as a kangaroo court. From then on, Kekkonen was able to threaten his political opponents with the Moscow card.

@johnburns4017 Or else welcome uncle Stalin. If the trial had been entirely orchestrated by the Finns, they would not have been arrested at all. "13. Finland undertakes to collaborate with the Allied powers in the apprehension of persons accused of war crimes and in their trial"

Great Finns. The criminal Risto Ryti is greater than the judge, because he resigned. Imagine if Hitler had said it, I messed up. I will resign. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suuret_suomalaiset

@johnburns4017 You are practically denying the conditional surrender. Suits me. It's true that prison sentences were shortened, and subsequent trials were due to Finnish gun laws. https://youtu.be/c2HwE8fsoLA

@slavashishkin3313 Nope, the Finns wanted a crusade and got it. Very prophetic: http://heninen.net/miekka/p1.htm

@ristusnotta1653 What?

@ristusnotta1653 Not so tragic. It was a crusade, as the man said. The policy of glasnost restored Orthodoxy's position at the fore of Russian national identity. http://rauha.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/turku.png

@ristusnotta1653 Depends on what year you mean. Karelians now live in Finland.

When ‘better’ forces drop napalm on you in 1939, it’s complicated.

Albert Speer in Lapland. He ate a lot of sauteed reindeer, but was not huge fan of cognac. https://bit.ly/2Z23wAf
