This is from May 1942. Judge: Do you have any comments against the prosecutor's statement? Prisoner: I would like to request a psychiatric assessment for the prosecutor

@cv4809 We have a posh accent in Finland, it's called Swedish.
18
Homeboy, 19yo Eero Seppänen was slightly wounded, but continued to fight using Panzerschreck, destroying eight of the 21 tanks destroyed in Siiranmäki. Which side is more fanatical? About 5000 Soviets KIA on that hill alone. My brother met Adolf Ehrnrooth in the 1990s. Although Adolf softened a bit, he was certainly quite ruthless as commander.
17
There is certainly a lot of cultural overlap with Switzerland as well in Austria. Language and culture don't always correlate with ethnicity. Naturally, smaller countries feel themselves more neutral, although as part of the so-called West.
15
Vyborg was roughly the same size as it is today. Finland had not yet urbanized. As a result, about 410,000 Finnish Karelians, were relocated to the remainder of Finland.
14
@Davey-Boyd As a former APILAS man, I guess it’s like throwing a bowling ball out of a boat, accompanied by a very loud bang.
7
@cv4809 What if a Mexican deny being Spanish?
7
Evacuate where? Argentina?
6
@simplicius11 "I am glad to see Finland recover her lost territory. My Government, and country and I have been loyal friends of Finland and would like very much to see our fine relations continue" Memorandum of conversation prepared by the Secretary of State, Cordell Hull October 3, 1941 Hull received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 for his role in establishing the United Nations.
6
@bozo5632 Based on the amount of your bitterness, it may be that Germany won WW2. I have not seen communists anywhere
6
@dwarow2508 Dear Col. Gen. Andrei Zhdanov, I can assure you that the stories you hear about Gustaf Mannerheim, if nothing else, have been watered down. Sincerely Dwarow 2
4
People tend to overestimate the importance of WW2. Birth control has had a greater impact on European demographics. The US is not doing very well. Brazil, Russia, India, and China are mediocre. Some are calling events over the last week democratic South Africa's "darkest hour".
4
Simply because it's a policy. Not a membership, but a Memorandum of understanding (MOU). Our current chief completed Airborne School in the US. Would you say Finland is a US state?
4
I think NATO should take Transnistria as compensation for Crimea
4
@stevewindisch7400 Then the museum should be called an indoctrination center or a church. That's not history it's denialism. Clearly they are doing a bad job because you are proud of your ignorance.
4
@bozo5632 You forgot Mao Zedong in China and Kim Il-sung in Khabarovsk Krai, Russia. Not to mention Yahya Khan was commissioned into the British Indian Army. Too bad your team whacked tens of millions after WW2. That doesn't count, because WW2 has a strict deadline, Ba dum tss, which must be adhered to.
4
That is nonsense. Mannerheim was Regent of Finland. He resigned twice and lost one election. No single party has achieved an absolute majority since 1916. Fascism is a type of unitary state in which only one political party.
4
However, G. Mannerheim was not the decision maker. A precondition for peace was a change of government and the severing of ties with Germany. Mannerheim consented to this, and on 4 August 1944 he was elected President of the Republic by the Parliament. Quite pointless to complain about something that was accepted by the Allied Control Commission. I recommend a Finnish song "Uraliin" here on Youtube. One commenter aptly said, the Urals are Finland's natural border.

@dwarow2508 "Gentlemen. We have received an honourable mission from the Marshal. We have to ski to the Muurmanni railway track, cut the track and let the Russians surround us. Then we have to remain surrounded for three days and then ski back. Am I making this clear, or are there any questions?" "This operation could make the Charge of the Light Brigade look like a sensible military exercise!" They did send a strengthened battalion-sized unit, but the operation was shortened to only one day raid.
3
@dwarow2508 In the south, from Lake Onega to the Karelian Isthmus, both sides adopted tactics of static trench warfare. Viipuri province was joined to Finland by Alexander I. It's not our problem that you build your city on the Finnish border.

How many served in the far north of Norway and Finland? Most of the 2nd Mountain Division men were from the Salzburg and Tyrol region of Austria. 9th Mountain Division (North) commander Generalmajor Mathias Kräutler was born in Wien...189 pounds, eye color: blue, lol very detailed information. Is this from the CIA archives? In collaboration with Karl Springenschmied, Generalmajor a.D. Kräutler published (1962) Es war ein Edelweiss: Schicksal und Weg der Zweiten Gebirgsdivision (It was an Edelweiss: Fate and Path of the 2nd Mountain Division), a detailed history of his former unit.
3
@Lykyk Detachment Kuhlmey's actions was a taboo for a long time. They don't appear as characters in popular culture. In hindsight, the Lapland war was republican policing. Urho Kekkonen was chosen as Justice Minister in November 1944. https://suomenpresidentit.fi/kekkonen/?lang=en
3
I guess you refer to a long-range patrol behind enemy lines led by Arnold Majewski. A.F Airo planned a larger operation that would have caused a US declaration of war, but it was canceled.
3
@edi9892 For example, dispatch has many meanings. You know, a soul hovering upwards. I feel like you don't know English. Watch a few movies.
3
@simplicius11 Petrozavodsk was already occupied by the Finns on October 1. After that, only Karhumäki was gained two days before the Attack on Pearl Harbor.
3
In Finland they said, "Personal Oh dear!", when people complained about marching exercises etc.
3
They were waiting for an invasion of Norway. If a person was stationed there, he experienced little activity in 1944-45, which easily gives a false impression of the overall situation.
3
@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623 Too bad the USSR doesn't exist.
3
@JohnRodriguesPhotographer Transnistria is a ghetto, not a fortress. Let's put the euro currency in there and some blue flag. All parties would appreciate it in a couple of years.
3
@peterk.5809 I recommend bundeswehr classix KFOR-Mission (1999).
3
Why is Chamberlain considered an appeaser? FDR and Stalin didn't declare war on Germany.
3
@stevewindisch7400 This nonsense spreads from Germany and more precisely from Africa to Finland. While the emblem of the Finnish Air Force Academy still features a swastika, the Air Force Command stopped using swastika in 2017. I'm not saying this is the end of the world, but every time you go beyond Russian censorship, Putin is starting to seem like a laid back guy.
3
The Siege of Hanko didn't end well for you either
3
@RotgerValdes Russia is about 45 times the size of Japan, hence plenty of room to retreat. Search for "Sotapolku JR30". All units have accurate maps and diaries. You also crossed the Finnish border, so I do not see any problem there. According to the diary of Soviet 205th Division, they looted Kuusamo on 27 September 1944.
3
There was an ongoing low intensity conflict between Finland and The USSR states that involved kidnapping hundreds of people. I think this conflict lasted until the 1950s, albeit they still had problems at the Estonian border in 2018. Option B is also difficult, which is why Estonia is a member of NATO.
2
@CruelDwarf There were also Soviet troops in Ivalo until September 1945. Although much less than the Winter War (3 months, 1 week and 6 days) in intensity, the Lapland War still ran over seven months. Which is why Japan also severed diplomatic relations just three months after the United States. Urho Kekkonen became Minister of Justice in 1944. Basically, he was accepted by the Allied Commission and led the country until 1981.
2
@srelma Väinö Tanner (SDP) was tried for responsibility for the war in February 1946, and sentenced to five years and six months in prison. He never forgave Paasikivi and Kekkonen. Allied Commission had the main power in Finland 1944-48.
2
@comsubpac Prince Karl Franz of Prussia died in Chile after the 1973 coup d'état. I'd watch a soap opera (telenovela) about him, since his grandchild is Grand Duke George Mikhailovich of Russia (House of Romanov).
2
While I admire working class grunts, I don’t imagine being smarter than a field marshal. Every leader eventually encounters push back. Unlike some power-hungry politicians, Gustaf Mannerheim resigned twice. After the war, Lauri Törni and weapons officer Arvo Männistö hid their weapons in Eno's wilderness, and in 1991 Mauno Koivisto's LMG was also found. In other words, there was still anti-communist resistance in 1944, at a time when Finland was at war with the Nazi-Germany.
2
@asgardelite3463 They just approved a € 750 billion recovery package. I would rather put it in the poorest regions of Europe than in the Mediterranean
2
@dietergermann2803 The USSR occupies Bessarabia and calls it the Moldavian SSR. Romania takes it back and whacks a bunch of people. Soviets reoccupy and destroy the Axis forces. NKVD/MGB also struck at anti-Soviet groups. Between 1946 and 1947, the Moldavian SSR suffered at least 115,000 recorded deaths linked to starvation.
2
Group Lagus pressed after German troops retreating north-east on the Arctic Sea Road towards North Cape via Sodankylä and Ivalo. Most SS men were NOT on the losing side, therefore they participated in parades until recent years. Lauri Törni is an exception and was convicted of treason. Meanwhile, the Red Army remained stationary in Ivalo until September 1945. Daily program included guarding, reconnaissance within a few kilometers around base, clearing mines, repairing roads and bridges, maintaining weapons and equipment.
2
I wouldn't gamble it. The Socialists managed to win their first and so far only parliamentary majority in the Finnish elections.
2
@Fluesterwitz Operation EF (1941) Operation Benedict Operation Orator Operation Silver Fox XXXVI Mountain Corps tried to secure the area around nickel mines and block the Lend-Lease shipments. At least officially, Risto Ryti together with Mannerheim canceled some operations related to American shipments and was able to avoid conflict.
2
@shibre9543 In this case, (Swedish) colonel Adolf Ehrnrooth allegedly ordered an artillery barrage to his own trenches. I have no precise information about his enemies Colonel Peter Agafonovich Kurenya and Colonel Georgy Pavlovich Isakov. That's why I asked.
2
I see the Battle of Helsinki as the first step of joining NATO 😂
1
"The Finnish Government also accepts the obligation to intern German and Hungarian nationals in Finnish territory." This meant deportation to the USSR, causing some 200,000 of them to eventually cross the Norwegian border
1
A book about the 7th division mention my grandpa participated on the attack to Murman Railway and Tali 1944. I'm not sure why he wasn't promoted. Maybe he murdered someone lol. I know he wasn't a poor person.
1
@jounisuninen To my understanding, Finnish artillery and the Air Force successfully bombed Leningrad, therefore the Russians moved to Tallinn and Helsinki was saved. Nearly zero civilian casualties. Kiitos!
1
@popsey72 No joke. I recommend: satunnaista sotilashistoriaa - vastaisku Leningradiin (kentille). Written by an UN veteran, so it's a bit modest video
