  2. We might have been something once but the narrative of English exceptionalism is a comical, toxic poison whose destructive results we can see all around us. We've voted to shut ourselves out of Europe behind a bureaucratic wall, ''give back control'' to billionaires who want to erode working rights/wages and we've voted to make ourselves poorer, that's how dense we are. What with the economy crashing and being reclassified as ''an emerging market economy'' maybe we haven't quite got it yet, but it's surely only a matter of time before even those with heads meatier than a butcher's shop on market day begin to see the light

  3. Conservatism has no future. The British Empire is done, like all others. It was finished in 1956 when the yanks pulled rank, showed us who was boss and forced us to pull out of Suez. We've been their cocker-spaniels ever since. When empires fold it's only a matter of time before everything packs in - the church, the monarchy, even territorial hegemony of the centre (us). The lot. The latest laughable royal tours surely demonstrates that ? Maybe not. Since the last century we've been like the B-movie character who is holding on to the crumbling window ledge.   4. No it's not, we're painfully aware that 50 per cent of the land is controlled by 1 per cent of the population because their medieval gangster ancestors grabbed it way back in the Middle Ages by subduing the local population. Starkey is just a woefully biased reactionary Tory.

I don't know about any of the others but I can accept that he may despise conservative values but then isn't that reasonable of him being, y'know, a man of the Left ? Conservative values are not compulsory, we do still live in a free society. But then, what are those values? They mean different things to different people, it's really important to describe what, exactly, you're advocating for and why, if you believe such values are axiomatically superior. Personally, I'm with Starmer, as a Libertarian on social matters I detest conservative values - we don't need the state to tell us whether we can divorce, who we can sleep with, whether we can take drugs, have an abortion or access assisted dying in our hour of need. We don't have a right to control or exploit other peoples and it's ridiculous that in this day and age we go through a pantomime of royal pageantry, surrendering to the divine authority of the king. It's about time we accepted We're not living in the middle ages - we have bots FFS! This is why Starkey is, intellectually, incoherent, advocating as he does for Libertarianism and social conservatism at the same time. Is actually more coherent to argue against economic liberalism on Libertarian grounds RE the market being a form of social control than the other way around

  7. So he slags off Rachel Reeves but what authority does he have as an economist ? And there was me thinking he was a tv presenter cum historian.There's an over-reliance on anecdotes and Ad Hominem personal invective rather than, y'know, actual details on precisely what is wrong with their economic plans, why and exactly what he would do differently -  uhhhm...we tried Trussonomics and it tanked the economy ....The comparison with US economic policy is simplistic, to say the least - so we can't borrow from other models now then ? Far be it from me to teach the venerable tv presenter Dr David, but a more constructive approach would focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the policies themselves, offering a fairer and more nuanced perspective.

  8. We invented Modernity eh ? I'm sorry but the master/serf psychology of England is still feudal even today , irrespective of our wealth or technological advance - the wealth isn't really shared is it. We're a bit backward in that respect and the rest of the world laughs at us as we stroke our egos with all that Medieval crap while we have no industry, no great geopolitical importance and can't even get our Trident up, so to speak.
