It's sobering that when the USA was facing the prospect of invading the Japanese home islands the American decision makers felt the same: that every Japanese - men, women and children - would fight to the death. So instead of risking 1,000,000 million casualties, the USA chose to use the atomic bomb - twice.

Indeed. It's amazing the number of people who don't know that. The attacks on the British, European and US bases in the Far East occurred on the 8th within hours of the Pearl Harbor attack - it's the same day as the 7th in Hawaii due to the International Date Line.

The problem is that most of the American audience would not have understood why, and would've said the film was wrong.

Yes @jguerr562 you are correct: the announcement from Tokyo would've come out on their 8th December because Tokyo is west of the International Date Line. The Pearl Harbor attack and other surprise attacks on interests in the Far East (Philippines, etc) occurred within hours of each other, but the former occurred on the 7th in Hawaii and the latter occurred on the 8th in the Far East - all on the same day. (If anyone doubts this, then here's an experiment to try: go to Pearl Harbor, and make a call to Tokyo. Ask them what time and date it is, and compare it with your local time in Hawaii.) Sadly, Hollywood couldn't put the 8th in the movie because a vast majority of the American audience wouldn't have understood why it would be the 8th in Tokyo where the radio broadcast was originating from but it would be the 7th in Hawaii - everyone knows Pearl Harbor was attacked on the 7th, so Hollywood had to make it also the 7th in Tokyo even though it was really the 8th.

There's no proof that he did actually say those words. But he did understand the industrial strength of the USA; and warned his superiors that after a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor he would be able to wreak havoc for six to twelve months, but after that all bets were off because the USA would've mobilised itself for total war.
