@michaeld.williamsiii9026 It's only the USA. Other Western societies aren't doing this.
4
@MartineH1 Possibly. But he shouldn't have taken his issues out on someone else.
4
@iprogeny4877 We have some people from the USA who have moved here to Australia. They're also enjoying the safety, the subsidized healthcare, and the ability to own a gun under a licensing scheme that keeps guns out of the hands of the loonies.

@TheRoyalNewspaper Was there a "knee" in the crime rate curve at 9/11? Other things have had a bigger impact, e.g. the GFC saw a lot of people in the USA having their lives turned upside down - that sort of social upheaval would have a bigger detrimental effect on society. If anything, 9/11 brought Americans together and made people more cooperative - it didn't drive them apart. One could argue that the insidious impact of the "War On Terror" may have had an impact, e.g. deaths, injuries (including PTSD), and extended and repeated deployments of service personnel (especially reservists, National Guard) impacting people's lives. But Vietnam (and Korea and WW2 before that) saw similar impacts, but people didn't start shooting each other for trivial reasons afterwards.

For a very long time, too.
3
@sammalone7881 But at least a severe punishment would keep him off the streets, and law-abiding folks wouldn't get hurt next time this guy doesn't get his way.
2
Like what? For people with the attitude that "the umpire / teacher / etc is always wrong and my kid is always right" , it may have been as simple as the umpire making a decision that the guy didn't like.
2
@Walker-ow7vj Not to this level it doesn't, at least not in Western societies. Seriously, you need to get out more and see what's happening in the rest of the world.
2
Yep, like don't even bother turning up anymore. Anyone who ever abused an official and wonders why amateur sporting leagues cannot get enough officials anymore just needs to look in the mirror for the answer.
2
@happity If a large mocha frappe isn't the answer then they're done for.
2
@Noodlepunk So how come these sorts of killings aren't happening in my country then? I live in a Western society where people can own guns but we're not shooting each other over leaf blowers, basketballs, or door knocking.
2
SINS = Ship's Inertial Navigation System. The only people it drives insane is the Navigating Officer when it doesn't work.
2
You can't really say that he's not from "here" - plenty of Americans have surnames like that.
2
Well said, both your original comment and your edit. The fact that people could somehow misconstrue your original comment indicates that they're part of the problem - they support someone who came after these girls long after they ceased being a threat. If those people who misconstrued your comment want to know what the problem is in the USA today, they need do nothing more than look in the mirror - the problem will be staring straight back at them!
2
@Creative_Melly Merely an observation that this sort of thing isn't happening in other Western societies where there's a form of gun licensing. If the situation continues in the USA then there will be a hell of a lot more mourning to come. ☹️
2
@byunniq9060 It's just an observation that it's not happening in other Western societies with some form of gun licensing in place. I am sorry for you if this observation offends you. I guess one becomes normalised to this sort of violence after a while?
2
@deathftmelancholy The woman didn't make it either. She was critically injured by her boyfriend (not the VP of Citibank guy), and appears to have died 3 years later.
1
That's insulting to wolves.
1
@jordanferguson2254 He is alive and well and working on a less ambitious project.
1
I live in a Western society where we can own guns. Ownership is regulated - among others, people with "priors" cannot have them. We went through the same COVID -19 issues: lockdowns, economic impacts, isolation, separation from loved ones, etc. But nobody here is shooting anyone over leaf blowers, basketballs, or door knockings. Go figure, as the Americans say.
1
@Aceburn5 But what about other Western societies - it's not happening there.
1
More like taking the "law" into one's own hands like that suggests a participant in 1/6.
1
@carewser Laughter is probably the only way people can stay sane in this situation. It's an emotional release, not an indication that they find anything funny.
1
It has got to the point where you cannot afford to make any mistakes - it could be the last thing you and those with you ever do.
1
There's a fund raiser for someone of the same name who died of domestic violence injuries three years later.
1
Evidence?
1
It's not happening in other Western societies, it's just the USA.
1
@MayYourGodGoWithYou Must have run foul of someone in the IRA? But they probably would've used an Armalite to brass up the car.
1
It's not the world. I live in a Western society where we can own guns and we're not killing each other like this.
1
Stupidity waddles deep ...
1
Well, it's more like what's going on in the USA. Elsewhere in Western societies we're not shooting each other over leaf blowers, basketballs, knocking on doors, or other trivial matters.
1
Now it's "A new neighbour! Hey everybody, put the wagons in a circle and break out the guns!" The wagon is still involved, just differently that's all.
1
@ClarkKent-tg6ls Just an excuse for those who need to carry a gun to prove they're a "man" ...
1
It's the USA. Other Western societies aren't seeing these problems.
1
@just-a-cupcake It's not happening in the Western society I live in. No-one in my country - a country where we can own guns - is shooting anyone over leaf blowers, basketballs, or door knockings.
1
Who knows - maybe it's "like father like son"?
1
Yep, gotta love good ol' thoughts and prayers. Been very effective so far ...
1
It's a bit hard if the highly sensitive person lives next door, or is driving in the car next to yours, or is behind you in the line in the supermarket, etc.
1
Maybe there's a clue - the 79 year old perceived leaf blower neighbour as a threat and went outside looking for blood? Ironic, isn't it!
1
Did we just watch the same video? The veteran was the guy who was punched.
1
Were you the umpire?
1
It's not happening in other Western societies, just the USA.
1
@mark26714 Maybe that will be his punishment - they'll make him clean the prison yard with a leaf blower and no earplugs?
1
@soulwarrior7721 This wasn't "split second". Young woman opens door, realises mistake, goes to correct car while apologizing - guy gets out of car and starts shooting. If I was the guy I would've locked the passenger door, and when she apologized would've said "It's ok, but be careful next time!" I wouldn't then have pulled some hardware and started brassing up her and those with her.
1
@Vendemiair The Founding Fathers needed a readily accessible army (the militia) to defend the country (to prevent Britain from reneging on the treaty that ended the American Revolutionary War), so the original intent is understandable. However, since then the USA has developed a military capability including the regular forces, the reserves, and national guards. In the eyes of those who feel the need to own weapons, this isn't sufficient to ensure the USA's safety. And those people have the backing of the courts who interpret the Constitution, and if course organisations like the NRA who can destroy a politician's career.
1
Yep. And when they complain that there aren't enough officials to run games anymore, they just need to look in the mirror for the answer.
1
Or people just need to be mindful of each other and the right to enjoy the amenity of their own home.
1
Someone of the same name did die due to domestic violence injuries about three years later - there's an online fundraiser.
1
He is exercising his freedom, his right to wreck his own eardrums if he wants. No-one is going to make him wear earplugs if he doesn't want to ...
1
Well, it's the USA. It's not happening in other Western societies.
