You might be interested in the phenomena of "black reef" where algae react to iron introduced by shipwrecks, etc. An example was Kingman Reef in the Pacific which had a two or three wrecks that were causing black reef. The US government removed the wrecks in an attempt to rehabilitate the reef, and now mariners cannot approach or land on the reef (it's a pile of rocks awash at low tide) without prior permission.

I heard the same thing from an English teacher who was quite an etymologist, having studied Latin, French, and Ancient Greek - if I recall correctly, they also said that the plural of hippopotamus is hippopotami because the word has a Latin root, even though it in turn derived from a Greek word meaning "river horse".

A person would become a whole ecosystem as well if they were buried at sea. The lifeforms at the bottom of the ocean are not choosy with regard to whether it's human, whale, or something else.
