@Philo Jones A Wehrmacht veteran who emigrated to Australia and wrote a book about his experiences related how his unit surrendered to the US forces thinking they were safe from the Soviets. They were being held with other Germans POWs surrounded by a ring of US military ... that night they heard lots of machinery noises and wondered what was going on - in the morning they found out: the Americans had left ... and ... instead they were being guarded by the Soviets. The next decade was not a very comfortable one for the veteran or his comrades.

I visited Pearl Harbor 20 years ago. Before you get on the boat to go to the Memorial, the volunteer guides give a lecture to tell you about the event. Our guide had been a Radioman aboard the USS West Virginia that fateful morning.

@simonmcnicholas My grand uncle (grandfather's brother) was a POW in Changi, also captured when Singapore fell. I only met him once. My father told me that when he came back home in 1945 he was very thin. My grandfather served in North Africa, and my only other grand uncle was KIA at Tobruk.

@awesomebrawel4050 Amazing, isn't it - but there was an incredible number of men mobilised on both sides.
