@yesyesyesyes1600 "In Austria (Europe ;) )" - I like! A special hint for our American friends who tend to easily confuse a certain two countries, even tough one is in Europe and the other is in the Pacific ... :)

The other film to watch is "The War Game". Most people will only want to watch it once ...

@whiddenm A very British sense of humour, too. :)

@paultapner1896 Last time we were texted due to an emergency (chemical fire causing toxic smoke and fumes over the city), the spelling and grammar was so bad that many people thought it was a prank and ignored the message - it looked like some backwards-cap-wearing, "Boyz In Da Hood", Gangsta Rappa wrote it. The government said they took that criticism on board ... but we've not had any events since warranting text messages, so there's no telling if they'll get it right or not next time.

In the mid-80s I remember seeing a documentary which stated the "duck and cover" drill wouldn't have worked, and it was likely promoted as a means of instilling some degree of hope in the general population.

@duellingscarguevara I heard that some warning systems broadcast AM on the 455 kHz IF and FM on the 10.7 MHz IF used in many radios - given the IF rejection of the average consumer-grade radio is fairly "average", it allows everyone to hear the message on their car radio, etc, regardless of what station / frequency they're tuned to.

@nzs316 If you pick the right frequency bands you'll also hear worldwide broadcasts during the day. When I was a kid building my first radios, someone had told me that shortwave worked only during the night, and that correlated with my experience at the time because that's when I heard the overseas stations on my home-built radio. I put a tap on the coil at the suggestion of a learned friend (he didn't say why) which pushed the frequency higher, but I didn't hear anything on it ... until one day when I was home from school, sick, and woke up during the middle of the day and listened to the radio - switching to the higher frequency tap on the coil suddenly brought in VOA, BBC, etc, during the day!!! Well, that experience blew that myth out of the water ... :)

@agentmueller A rabbit hole of thought, or a nuclear bunker of thought?
