@brianreddeman951 I find those epithets about Poles rather strange - I've not met an allegedly dumb person from Poland yet. Lots of them emigrated to Australia and helped build the country, especially the Snowy Mountains scheme. Some of them had remarkable stories to tell about how they were evicted from their own country because they didn't toe the government line.

"And finally in July, 1947, Błyskawica arrived back in Poland to be used as a training ship ..." No doubt her crew were "sold down the river" by the Allies, and - if "lucky" - spent a number of years as guests of the USSR, just like the other Polish service personnel who returned home after the war.

@TheDaverobinson The trouble is that the FDR and Stalin were playing the "long game" in WW2, whereas Churchill wasn't. This is understandable, as the British people had been fighting since September 1939 and were totally over the war by the time May 1945 arrived - the last thing anyone on the western side of the English Channel wanted was more war in Europe, and Japan was a long way away so it wasn't going to bomb them ... and in any case the USA was busy smacking seven kinds of crap out of Japan anyway. Still, it's disgusting what happened to all those Polish service personnel. Sometimes I wonder how the people responsible for that decision wanted to be remembered some 70 years after the war - as heroes, villains, or cowards?

Depends on where the movie would be made ... there's a risk that it would be depicted as an American ship ...

@thejudgmentalcat And add to that potentially a partner ... they take up a lot of time, too. :)

@rovercoupe7104 That documentary "Bloody Foreigners" tells the story of a Polish squadron in the RAF during the Battle Of Britain - talk about over-achievers!

I suspect those who survived after the return spent a number of years as guests of the USSR. After all, one can't have people spreading these decadent Western ideals around the place.

That's a shame that Captain Francki ended up that way. I wonder if he could've served in the RAN if he was offered the opportunity?

@Joshua-fi4ji Allowing for a bit of misunderstanding of the Roman numbering system; I understand WW11 was after WW1 and will highly likely precede WW111 ... which might have already started for all we know. I wouldn't get too upset about the Roman numerals ... it's a bit like getting tied up over "it's vs its", "they're vs there vs their", etc, on social media - in the end it's like ploughing the sea, and is highly unlikely to change the habits of people.

@15-Peter-20 What is Fort VII? Please tell us about it.

Maybe. Learning is a two-way street. Yes, you need good teachers, but the student also needs to want to learn. Many kids don't see the need to learn, or don't have the impetus or self-discipline to keep learning even when they'd prefer not to. And now we see the results in everyday life - you reap what you sow.

@iffracem It's quite possible that most of Eastern Europe would have been "glowing", but it would've been due to Allied bombs being used on Soviet formations. The USSR would've sued for peace soon enough after a few of its top fighting formations had been reduced to burnt crisps.

@johnjephcote7636 With that sort of hat-doffing to Stalin, Neil Kinnock might as well have been Prime Minister.
