@ColinH1973 Well said, LOL. This'll get the conspiracy theorists going: I'm guessing she looked like herself ... :D

I used to work in the same building as a lady who looked just like Queen Elizabeth II only 20 years younger. (And it wasn't Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral, etc ... LOL.)

If I looked like Stalin I wouldn't be advertising it after he died, especially given the de-Stalinisation which occurred thereafter.

@MarkFeltonProductions I've never seen the film, but I remember first reading the book as a "Reader's Digest Condensed Books" edition. A great read, and at the age I was at the time it had me completely fooled until the author's note at the very end ... a story so well constructed that it seemed very, very plausible. :)

@ColinH1973 It's rumoured that after his escape from Berlin, Hitler promoted Johnson (known as Johanssohn or Johanßohn after her disappearance) to the role of chief test pilot of Die Glocke, but further development halted when it was found that Die Glocke was in fact merely a passenger capsule for navigating an interstellar wormhole transport network, and there was no way for the pilot to steer it. This rumour actually inspired the movie Contact, where Jodie Foster's character is based on Johanßohn's body double. Hitler demanded that a body double was used in the actual tests, as he felt Johanßohn was too valuable to lose - especially if the scientists' worst fears were realised where Die Glocke crashed and was stranded forever in hyperspace because it encountered a worm coming the other way.

Niven starred in some wartime films. The Way Ahead was one.

Given the previous posts detailing the military experiences of the WW2 leaders (FDR being a natural exclusion of course for very real and obvious reasons), your comment isn't correct about that particular cohort. But you're right about many leaders in recent years, after all the ex-WW2 service personnel leaders died off - I can think of a few in the Western world other than the obvious example of JFK. Most of the "political class" in the West nowadays haven't served in the military let alone experienced a deployment let alone experienced combat. It is those people who should be forced to "lead" the troops from the very front - of course, that's highly unlikely, but I wonder how they'd feel if their own son or daughter was in uniform and in harm's way? But the likelihood of their own relatives being adversely affected is very low, because none of them serve either ...

And Michael Caine himself had a body double who was killed in that same film ...
2
@tedf1471 The man he gets his info from is younger than 133 years at the times when Dr Felton visits him using Die Glocke ...

@scottlewisparsons9551 Mentour Pilot's channel is great. It doesn't surprise me that he has an editor. Other 1+ million subscriber channels do likewise because the channel owners do not have enough time in the day to do the editing and conduct all of the research, present on camera, etc, as well as hold down whatever day job they have.

Prior to fingerprints, there was French detective who used certain body measurements and features as identifying marks. I've forgotten his name, but ears was one of those features.

I hope your de-Stalinisation is going well.

@JoinMeInDeathBaby The enemy of your enemy is your friend ... until your enemy is defeated, at which time they become your new enemy.
1
@humanafterallTF2 Agreed. A Nazi Germany with unfettered access to Europe's resources (including those of European USSR) would've been a formidable opponent.
1
That's a classic. I'll be no-one in the graduating class would ever forget that moment. I can't remember what was said in the speeches at my graduation ... but I do remember being there.
1
LOL. Read Jack Higgins's author's note at the end of the book!
1
@smr32061 The edition I read just after it came out had the note at the end. It's still just a story invented by a very creative mind.
1
No-one is who they appear to be in this day and age. We all have body doubles, it seems. If you eat too much and don't exercise enough then you end of with double body.

@zobblewobble1770 MacArthur nearly got zapped during his nighttime escape from the Philippines. He and his wife were escaping by PT boat, and when they landed they would board an aircraft which would fly them (eventually) to Australia. One of the escorting PT boats lost visual contact with the boat the MacArthurs were on, but hadn't realised this. Then they noticed this other boat following them in the distance. Thinking it was Japanese, they were about to open fire on it when they realised it was a PT boat. A close call in the fog of war!

Which sources are they?

If you're out of the country having a conference with FDR and Stalin at Yalta and you don't want the Germans to know, then it will help if you "appear" to give a radio speech on the BBC at the time.

Here in Australia it's either Grammarly (which is used by Americans, so the spelling is different to that used here), or a locally-bred Trump-like politician who is busy trying to convince people to vote for him at the next federal election. The trouble is that he's fighting yesterday's battles and raving on about issues which are no longer issues for most people in this country. I'm not interested in a grammar / spelling corrector or someone who isn't addressing today's and tomorrow's issues.

Or White City even, back before 7th December 1941.

He'd be just a second piece in his time ...

Apparently if you say that in China then you disappear for re-educating for quite a long time.
1
Monty did have a soft spot for the Australian 9th Division after El Alamein.
1
Grand Moff Tarkin
1
The Chinese government gets very upset when it's suggested that Winnie the Pooh is their leader's body double.
1
"Dancing" Hitler? Really. That would be a sight to see.
1
And umpteen hundred comments ...
1
A pantomime Göring uniform ... it comes in two pieces: "You can be the back this time, I'll be the front." PS (edit): in Göring's case, it would be a double body ...
1
Rusty Shackleford? Was his WW2 codename "Corroded Cadillachitch"?
1
Grand Moff Tarkin?
1
That's the problem - Americans cannot laugh at themselves, otherwise Richard Dixon would've had an upturn in success.
1
I heard he has a double take.
1
@Jreb1865 And that wouldn't be hard to do ... as your later comment states, there are plenty of Elvis impersonators around, so being seen in London with one wouldn't be very notable.
1
But think of the advantages - we'd get double the amount of videos!
1
Was that in German Africa?
1
It's a brave or foolish person who chooses to run the gauntlet of The Official Secrets Act ...
1
@wayneantoniazzi2706 You might be amazed at how many people don't know it's fiction, despite the author's note at the end. I've never seen the movie, but I read the book and thought it was great.

"Do you know, I've been Queen nearly 10 years. And in that time I've had three prime ministers, all of them brilliant men, ambitious men. Not one has lasted the course - they were either too old, too weak, or too ill. A confederacy of elected quitters."
