Indeed. MacArthur recognised that he needed the Emperor alive and in place in order to pacify Japan - a small tactical trade-off for a great strategic victory.

My grandmother was the wife of a soldier who returned from North Africa as a TPI; and the sister-in-law of two others: one who was imprisoned by the Japanese in Malaya, and another who never returned from Tobruk. The only thing she ever said about the war was this: "You would dread the telegram boy turning into the top of the street ... and a damn lot of people in our street got telegrams!" She died only a week or so before Hirohito.

In contrast, the comments sections of YouTube videos let people fly their true colours. Some of those people will have an interesting time defending their actions in about a decade when there's sufficient computing power to link a "fake" YouTube subscriber name to a real person. Anonymity is great to hide behind until technology comes up with a new equivalent of an x-ray machine.

You need to factor the dislike of the USA into one of the prime reasons why certain people continue to argue against the position stated in Dr. Felton's video.

Thank you for a most informative video, Dr Felton. And your last question is one which many in this ongoing debate seem unable to answer.

Daring Mark Felton on history is a bit like a history version of "Do you think you're fast enough, bartender?"

My great uncle got to come home because of Truman's actions - he had been captured in Malaya and was a guest of the Japanese for the remainder of the war.
