I had the pleasure of meeting an elderly English gentleman who had been a gunner in the Western Desert campaign. Rommel and the Kasta saved his life and the lives of his colleagues. The British gunners had been overrun and captured by the Italians, who were going to shoot them out of hand. But Rommel arrived, and relieved the Italians of their prisoners. Later, the Kasta rendezvoused with another German unit and transferred the prisoners. The next day that German unit was captured by the British, thus ending the short period of captivity for these British gunners.
