Quite a few of them captured in the Northern Desert campaign ended up as POWs in Australia, and were "hired out" to the farmers. And some of them returned as post-war immigrants after arriving home and discovering what a mess Europe had become.

Indeed. People should realise that it would be like Allied pilots taking a Brewster Buffalo or a Wirraway trainer out to fight Mitsubishi Zeroes.

Until I read Antony Beevor's book "Stalingrad", I didn't realise the Italians had fought on the Eastern Front. The book also tells the story of Italian POWs in the USSR.

I was talking with an old gentleman who served in the Allied armies in North Africa. He and his unit were captured by Axis forces during the 2nd Battle Of El Alamein, but were POWs for only one day. He said he and his friends very nearly didn't make it. They were captured by the Italians, who were lining them up to shoot them ... until Rommel himself arrived with his column and relieved the Italians of their prisoners. The German column then split up, with Rommel and entourage going elsewhere. The next day, the German unit (with its Allied prisoners) were captured by the British.

Maybe the RAF were looking at what it could do. Remember, at that time the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm were still flying a very successful biplane torpedo bomber.
