@martijnb5887 You make some interesting points. I believe that it is important for people to remember that a country may remember its past, but it is not its past. The USA of today is not the USA of the 1940s - in many aspects they are chalk and cheese, as the people of today and then act and think differently.

Similar things happened in the war in the Pacific. The Allies just bypassed certain islands while taking key strategic island; knowing that the Japanese forces on the bypassed islands would be cut off from supplies so they couldn't do anything - and it wasn't worth to cost of men, materiel, and time to take them by force. The island of Rabaul was an example.

@odonovan The USA is nowhere near as socialist as most Western European (including Scandinavian) countries, or countries like Australia and New Zealand.

@tomsmith5088 The USA of today is not the USA of the 1940s - they are two countries, and in many respects they're chalk and cheese. Why? Because a country is its people, and how those people think and act. A country may remember its past, but it is not its past. The vast majority of the American people of the 1940s are dead, and the Americans of today are different from the Americans of 75 years ago.
